Batch numbers and product traceability

A useful batch identifier links the physical container to the correct specification, analytical record, and handling history.

One identifier, one evidence trail

The batch number on the container should match the batch shown on any specification or analytical record. Similar product names, strengths, or prior lots are not substitutes.

Minimum traceability record

• Product name and catalog identifier
• Batch or lot number
• Supplier or origin record
• Receipt date and condition
• Related report numbers and document versions
• Storage location and handling events

Why current documents matter

NIST advises users to ensure the certificate in their possession is current. A controlled record should preserve both the document received and any later revision, with the applicable batch clearly identified.
